This is where Joe’s Place keeps its live music reviews — real takes on the concerts, albums, and books that pass through our hands. No press-release fluff, no rubber-stamp five stars. Just honest reactions from people who were actually in the room or actually put the record on.
Steve Obrien handles most of the coverage here, and he’s got a soft spot for anything raw and real — blues legends, jazz trios doing something unexpected, arena rock reunions, small-room shows that surprise everyone in attendance. Marcus Twine chips in too, with a sharp eye for blues history and the occasional deep-dive book review when something crosses his desk worth talking about.
The shows range wildly on purpose. One week it’s a jazz trio at a performing arts center, the next it’s a stadium act blowing the roof off, or a book on the golden age of Southern rock that deserved more attention than it got. If it’s live, recorded, or written about music, there’s a decent chance it ends up here eventually.
What ties it together isn’t genre — it’s honesty.
These reviews aren’t written to please a publicist or hit a word count. They’re written the way you’d describe a show to a friend the next morning: what worked, what didn’t, what moment made the whole night worth it.
New reviews get added as the shows happen and the records land, so this page is never really “finished.” Check back often, and if you caught a show we haven’t covered yet, drop a comment — we’re always looking for the next great night out.
We’ve been doing this long enough to know that not every show or record deserves five stars, and we’re not shy about saying so.
